Mini Pintail PP

This is the start of a new build and will be the first that is chronicled from beginning to end on this site.

The idea for this board came from a couple of other builds that I have in progress (Short board PP and Bonus board). Those two boards are modeled after a short board that I like which has a pointy nose and a rounded tail. As I continue to work on those boards I keep thinking how cool it would be if I flipped the board around and made the rounded end the nose and the pointy part the tail. Its too late to do that on those boards because I’ve put a lot of nose rocker into them and I don’t think that would translate well into tail rocker.

So here I go with a new build.

I’ll use the exactly same plan shape but adjust the rocker so it makes more sense as a pintail. This will be a parallel profile board, hence the suffix PP. I also plan to use a lone tunnel fin on this one which should make for an interesting look and a wicked ride.

I will make this board entirely from lath which is a wooden slat that is usually used in the construction of plaster walls. I like using this wood because it is light, cheap and easy to work with. It also saves me a bunch of time milling planks and strips. I use it as-is and simply cut it to length with my hand japan saw. In fact the only power tool I will use in this build will be my belt sander and I really could forgo that as well and do all of the sanding by hand.

You can see from the photos below that I’m using the original Short board PP (Parallel Profile) as a template to lay out the internal frames.

Oh, I should also mention that I’m experimenting a bit with the internal frame layout. I’m spacing out the frames more than I have in the past in an effort to save some weight and gain a bit more flex.
