Mini Pintail – Shaping Rails

Fine tuning the rails.

I’m doing this part by hand using a rasp and a sanding block with very course belt sander paper attached to it.

This eats wood very quickly and allows me to realy fine tune the shape as I go. I’m trying to take my time to get the rails just right on this one. On previous builds I’ve shaped my rails according to plan but without knowing exactly what the dynamics of the rails are. Lately I’ve been trying to get a better understanding of how rails do what they do. What causes the rail to bite and what makes it release.

While I do this by hand I’m trying to work in the direction of the water flow and visualize how the water will interact with the rail as I go. I imagine that I can feel how the water will release off the rail as I drag the rasp off the edge.
